2008 Bodie McDowell Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations to the 2008 Bodie McDowell Scholarship winners!

Successful graduate students:

  • 1st place - Elizabeth Harrison (University of Montana) - $2,000 

  • 2nd place - Matthew Cimitile (University of Michigan)- $1,500 

Successful undergraduate students:

  • 1st place - Joy Ratchman (University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point) – $1,500

  • 2nd place - Teeka Ballas (University of Alaska, Anchorage) - $1,000

2008 scholarship recipients will receive their awards in one installment, distributed approximately August 29, 2008.

The Education Committee, chaired by Jason Jenkins, reviewed applications, scored them based upon predetermined criteria and selected winners. 

OWAA staff solicited applications via letters and e-mails sent to deans and department chairs. OWAA endowment trustees approved the distribution from the Bodie McDowell Scholarship Fund.

Procedures

The candidate submits a completed application, letter of recommendation from school, grade transcript, examples of outdoor communication work, a one- to two-page statement of career goals, and optional letters of recommendation from others familiar with applicant’s work.

Deadline to apply: March 1, 2009 (must be postmarked or shipped by March 1).

Awards

Bodie McDowell scholarship awards are usually given annually to three or more students. Awards can range from $1,000 to $5,000. 

Students

Recipients must be students of outdoor communications fields including print, photography, film, art or broadcasting. Open to eligible students in two categories:

  1. Undergraduate students entering junior or senior years of study

  2. Graduate students

School

Scholarship program open to all college students, undergraduate and graduate, from all disciplines and all schools.

Criteria

Career goals in outdoor communications, examples of work and letters of recommendation. Academic achievement is considered but is not among the top three selection criteria.

If you know a student with an outdoor emphasis who might benefit from the Bodie McDowell Scholarship, ask him or her to apply. The deadline is March 1, 2009. Application / procedure information is listed at right.

Disclaimer

Scholarship distributions amounts are contingent on investment performance as outlined in OWAA bylaws. If investment performance falls below expectations in the eight-quarter period preceding anticipated payout, no distribution from the Bodie McDowell Scholarship Fund will be made.
